ive heard that the p5b vanilla wasnt really recommended when thinking of overclocking and the 680i is just overkill if i dont plan to SLI

what chipset(and board) could probably suit me the best if i wish to oc at around 3.2~3.4ghz

"Vanilla" isn't good but the deluxe version I hear is a good overclocker. I have the P5W DH which is also a decent one, might be overkill for you though. Here's a guide by Wusy showing some of the best boards for OC'ing.

but i can get a 680i for basically the same price as a p5b deluxe... would the 680i be better even if i dont SLI?

I have this same exact problem. I need to find a good motherboard for overclocking but I don't won't to shell out the premium for an SLI board cause I would rather just get one 8800 anyways.

MB and ram selection always seems to be the hardest for me when building a new system I'm going to overclock.

Why does everyone have a hard on for SLI?

I'm sure someone here will have a good MB suggestion, several of us would benefit from it.

Throw in some good budget OC ram too while you're at it.

Also Intel965/975....does it matter? Will both suffice for overclocking current C2D?
