Laptop / HDTV Combo Question

As soon as we hit Feb 1st, I'm thinking of buying the following:

Laptop:
Core 2 Duo (2.0 Ghz)
2 GB RAM
256 MB ATI Mobility x1400

HDTV:
Sony KDL40XBR2 (1920X1080 Resolution)

1 HDMI Cable

Will I be able to run the television off the laptop? If not, what do I need to think about getting?

Is there any reason to wait a few months? I leave college after that and I'll lose a lot of breaks on the laptop - so there's no chance I'll wait 6 months.

What do you mean "run the television"?

Might not have been the best phrasing. Use the TV as a monitor for the laptop - including for DVD use.
