Hey everybody
I have a quick one. Is it better (having SLI motherboard) to have two cheaper cards or to save and have one - more expensive.

Example:
2x 7600 GS or 1x 7800GT

or

2x 256MB or 1x 512mb

Thanks for clarification

If you need to ask someone else this question then chances are you only need one card.

SLI is only needed for pushing out very high resolutions (24-30" Widescreen LCD's) with very high enchancments such as anti-aliasing < 8x.

Even at 16x12 then you are barely seeing the benefits. Widescreen 24" is where its at

Single card all the way for mainstream use

Sorry fly, you must have been typing when I posted the edit :?

Hehe, it happens. No biggie :)

Good catch correcting yourself. Nothing was inherently wrong with what you said, but good edit for clarity.

What resolution is your monitor running? If it's 1600x1200 and higher then an SLI of 7800GT or Crossfire equivalent would be needed to run games at high settings. At 1280x1024 and lower, a single card would be sufficient enough to run games with modest quality.

I still hit high settings on every game so far on a 7900GTX and 16x12, so a 7900GT would be plenty, all though it's hard to justify the purchase of DX9 cards in excess of $200-250 now due to DX10, but thats for another thread.

Hey Guys,

Thank You much for explanation. I am not a heavy gamer so I think that one card would be sufficient. I have 17' monitor running 1280:1024.

Thanks

Normally, I would say 2 cheaper cards in sli would be better than one more expensive card, but right now its not true.

If you're considering 2 DX9 cards or 1 DX10 card, I'd definately go with the single card. Partly for DX10 and HDCP (which don't mean much now but will soon).

Also if you have a cheaper rig, an 8800 card has so much power compared to any DX9 card that your cpu will become the bottleneck anyway. I have a 6800 extreme and 2 8800 GTX's in SLI. Actually I've found there's not much noticeable performance difference between 1 and 2 GPU operation (10000 3dmark06 vs 13000 3dmark06 ) presumably because my cpu is the bottleneck.

My budget is close to $300 for video card
I was thinking more like two 7600GS (256MB) or One 8800 (one online retailer has it for $384)

Hey outlw6669

Thanks for great news and sorry for my lack of understanding but your comparisoin 7800GT vs 7600GS SLI means that you have one 7800 GT versus two physical 7600 GS cards set up in SLI mode?

Thanks Again for great info

That is it exactly.
The cards listed "SLI" would be a dual card setup.
Check some of the other benchmarks before you make a decision, though.
Not all games make full use of SLI which is why I have it comming showing 3D Mark 06.
With games that don't use SLI propperly, having a better base card will make a huge diffrence.

So personally which one you would be leaning forward to:
XFX PVT73PYDJ3 GeForce 7600GS 512MB 128-bit
XFX PVT73PUDJ3 GeForce 7600GS 256MB 128-bit

Difference in price - $30
Difference in cards: one is 256MB and other 512mb

Or should I go for
XFX PVT71GUQL3 GeForce 7900GT 256MB 256-bit

Single 7900GT easily.
