I have 2 computers in my house I would like to share a single cable internet connection with. I know nothing about networking, so I did some research in this forum and found I need a cable/DSL router. However, some things are still not clear to me.
Here are my requirements:
1. be able to have the option to only have 1 computer on at a time and still have internet (not be dependant on 1 being the server computer).

2. the ISP I want to go with wants to charge an extra $10 per month for a 2nd computer connected. I want to get around this.

3. I want to do this for as cheap as possible.

I noticed people recomending MANY different routers on up to $200. However, I see cable/DSL routers at Best Buy or Newegg for just $50. Do I really need something fancy?
Is there any other cheap solution other than a router I did not find?
I only need 2 computers connected.
Thanks

A router will let you have only one computer at a time turned on and still get internet.
A router will assign each computer connected its own ip address seperate from the one the isp gives you. Just dont tell them you have 2 computers hooked up.
I ahve used the linksys routers (about $50 or so) with no problems.
You could use ICS but that requires one computer to always be on for the 2nd computer to connect which isnt what you want.
