I am preparing to purchase a high definition tivo unit in the next several
days. Before last Wednesday, I had a Sony SAT-W60 Ultimate tv in the family
room, a Sony SAT-A55 in the study, and an RCA DWD490RE (Direct TV-Ultimate
TV) in the master bedroom, all working excellently. Because I an
contemplating the HD tivo unit in the family room, directv sent me a Hughes
Directv DVR SD-DVR40 (Tivo) for the master, so that I could eventually
convert to tivo service from ultimate tv service (and not mindlessly pay for
both services). Also, Directv forwarded to me a SAT-C kit for my oval
18x24" directv Plus satellite dish.

The tivo unit was installed last wednesday by directv professionals. Today,
I added the sat-c kit. After installing the sat-c, I reconfigured all of
the receivers for oval 3.

Both my Family room receiver and my study receivers see all three satellites
and get a great signal on all appropriate transponders. Additionally, I see
channel 99 on all three receivers.

However, the new tivo unit is having a problem with Satellite 119. It is
saying the right side of satellite 119 is not detected and to check cables
and/or that my mutiswitch is connected correctly. On 119 the new tivo unit
does not see transponders 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, or 32. However, it gets a
great signal on all appropriate transponders on the 101 and 110 satellites.

Each of my 3 units receive a diplexed satellite and cable signal. Diplexed
in and diplexed out on each of the three homeruns. However, before the
cable connection is diplexed into any of the satellite homeruns...it goes
through a splitter that splits the signal from one to three (for each of the
rooms).

What is wrong? I'm seeing everything on the Family room and study
receivers...both sony receivers (which makes me think it is not the
mutiswitch). But not seeing even transponders on only 119 on the new tivo
unit...but seeing everything else (which makes me think it is not a
multiswitch problem as well). Please provide me some suggestions.

Does tivo permit diplexing cable and satellite? Why no problem with the
sony receivers? THanks for your learned responses...

Have not run into this specific failure before, but
generally speaking, a loss of all odd or all even
transponders is (most often) a cabling failure, or (second
most often) an LNB failure.

As you certainly seem to be knowledgeable, I'd suggest doing
some cable and LNB swapping to see when the symptom "moves"
to determine where the problem has occurred.

An aside...

You mentioned 99, but not 400. If you're not hearing
Spanish on 400, you really don't have B (regardless of what
your metering may say).

Good luck.

That is very strange. The transponders on Sat C at 110 are all even and
piggybacked onto Sat B at 119. Being able to get 110 but not 119 even would
seem to indicate a problem with the Sat C combiner or the dish aim. The
other receivers working would indicate no problems with the combiner or aim
though. Try switching positions between the Tivo and a working receiver
temporarily. See if the problem follows the Tivo. If it does, the Tivo is
defective. If the problem stays with the location, there is something
marginal in the wiring, connectors, or combiner that the other receivers are
able to overcome. I believe you have one output on your multiswitch that is
unused. You could try moving the Tivo connection there if you determine the
Tivo box works at another location.

A number of people have reported problems with the Sat C kit over time. Mine
has been working fine for years but having my combiner indoors may help. If
I ever develop a problem, I've decided to get a new Phase III dish because
they seem to be more reliable.
