"I'm sorry, it doesn't look like I'm in the neverwinter nights install
directory. please put me back, or re-install neverwinter nights"

I've never seen this message myself, but it looks like you've moved the
directory NWN is installed in to another place.

A general advice: You can't move applications like that. Don't do that.
Applications may be unable to find resources they need and may stop working.

But in NWN's case, you can modify your registry to match your directory
move.

*If you know how to modify your registry*
Look under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Software, find Neverwinter Night's node,
there should be a path in it. Modify it.

*If you don't*
Move NWN back to where it was, or re-install NWN in the new location.

afaik, i haven't moved any files - the problem just seems to have occurred
for no reason. looking through past posts on the bioware forums, its
happened before to a lot of people for no reason and no one seems to have
found a solution. the registry entry was still set to the correct folder.

it looks like i'm going to have to reinstall

Then perhaps NWN can't find some of the files.

Probably the best way to solve it... finding out what really happened might
require a lot of time (your gaming time).

You don't have to re-install it, I had this problem this morning all you need to do is run it from the folder where it is installed. Go into program Files and Atari there's a file called Neverwinternightsmain.exe or something like that. run it from this file or make a shortcut of that file for your desktop.
I don't know how long ago you posted it so this will probably be useless to you, but at-least you know now.
