I think they will be the same for DX9 games but for DX10 shader intansive games the 8600ultra will defenatly win due to its 64 shaders

It's all speculation, well mostly. The 8800GTS 320MB version is pretty close to the 7900GTX 512 performance.

So I am thinking if you are looking for a viable upgrade, you might have to go to 8800GTX or 8600Ultra (who knows how it will bench though.)

What card is pictured? Surprising if it is the 8600 and doesn't require any extra power. Nice that Nvidia stuck with the x600 and below don't need a beast of a PSU.

If by pretty close you mean noticeably ahead in most games, then yes it is.

I find the price of the 8600 Ultra to be pretty interesting, assuming it's true.

Based on this I'm guessing it'll be better than the 7900 GS and X1950 PRO, but not worlds better. Pretty close probably.

Sure, it has 64 shaders, but remember the 8800 series shaders are not nearly as efficient as the 7800 or X1950 series shaders.

The 24 shader 7900 GTX and 48 shader X1950 XTX are not worlds apart from the 96 shader 8800 GTS as far as performance goes...

If it could have beaten the old guard's top cards, the 8600 Ultra would have been more than $200 I reckon.

If the 8600 Ultra CAN beat the X1950 XT for under $200, Nvidia is looking to put tremendous pressure on Ati/Amd... but I don't think they'd do that because they'd horribly devalue all of their 7x00 cards still left in the channel.

I call it "pretty close" in meaning "you would be unrational to upgrade from a 7900GTX to the 8800GTS 320 and expect a huge performance increase."

If you game at 1600 x 1200 and under (where most people do) the race is much closer.

Pure speculation, where do you think the 8600 Ultra will fall? ~7800GTX or 7950GT ish? Your guess is probably more valuable than anyone here. I'm looking to upgrade and will probably end up going 8800GTS 640.

Figured it would be around there. Thanks for the input.

I bet I will still be pushing for an 8800GTS 640mb, if it can be fit into my budget.

Will be interesting to see how the prices lay out once the full 8000 line of cards and the R600s are out. I'm excited  Upgrade time is always a fun time.

I agree with logain. Wait 2-3 weeks, nothing bad will come of it. Prices aren't going to shoot through the roof or anything, it will only get better :)

That's what I was hoping to do. But if mine and Cleeve's estimations are correct, I don't know if the upgrade in performance will warrant the $200 price tag that the 8600 ultra will probably have for a few weeks after it's release. Will wait to see some benches though, you can always send me your 7800 and I will SLI a pair for a few months :p
