My new cable box has a SPDIF output with AC-3 surround sound.
My Home theater receiver does not decode this but will take 5.1 audio inputs
(like my DVD is hooked up).
Is there an inexpensive SPDIF AC-3 to 5.1 audio decoder that would do this?
Id rather not have to buy another Hometheater receiver if its more
economical to do the above.

AC-3 is just another way of saying Dolby Digital 5.1.
Could you by chance mean that your box has an RCA type coaxial output and
what your receiver wants is an optical type input?
Gotta learn the language before you try communicating with the natives.

no..my receiver does not decode.....but will accept audio 5.1 input......so
that was why I was wondering if a cheapy was available. Thats why when I
bought my cd player I got one with a built in decoder and it outputs 5.1
....45 channels of analog audio. From what I have seen, it probably makes
sense get a new reciever iwth decoder built in.
thanks

Are you saying your receiver has 5.1 analog inputs for sources (like a
DVD player with a built-in DD decoder) that have 5.1 analog outputs? If
that's the case, and yourcable box has a digital audio output
(coax/optical) then you need to feed it to a source that can decode the
signal.
