Should BOM try to change us? AKA - Death of the other..

I believe the correct phrase for opening herself that wide would be gapping.

Regardless what happens I see a few things happening here. They can try and clean up the Other and eventually some of the most faithful posters over the years will eventually get fed up and leave/take a break from the site, causing a mass shift of what actually does go on in the other. They will close the Other "until further notification" for the lack of better terms and hence again, most of the posters down here will leave/take a break. Or they will try and clean up the place down here, and most of the people down here, not really giving a fcuk will post how they want and get banned; again BoM/Toms losing some of its most active/longest active members.

Any of the options seem really crappy to me but, it is there site and they do whatever the fcuk they want to it, ie. run it into the ground and/or try and work on a solution that will be agreeable for both sides. Crappy thing is, while this place is really just a place to blow off steam, I really do not want to see it "go" and I don't want to see people leave which I have known for years and are willing to help with a multitude of things, not just computer hardware or things of that nature. One solution would be to make the other like a special club for those who have been around the forums long to enter, but then that lacks the ability to "recruit" new lowlifes and scum. Another solution would be to setup our own site where rules are made up by the consensus, which would inevitably mean we all would pretty much leave Toms.

There is going to be a point where all of us/BoM/Toms will have to make sacrifices but, it what it is. What we could use is make a discussion forum with some of the older folks from Toms, BoM, Other-specific degenerates, representatives from the upper forums. Kinda like what happened a few years ago when they changed the software and had a mass discussion on what was needed and what was fodder. Do I see that happening? not really. but then again it is their site.

At any rate, I have been here for more than 70% of Toms lifetime as a website, some of the other posters have been here longer and quite possibly from its conception. An interesting battle will probably ensue, hopefully it will not come to that. But I think inevitably, it will. The great Toms civil war if you will...

Please, if you chose to read all this, and would like to discuss options of what we can or cant do, shoot me a pm, I will respond and try to get some sort of proper discussion from both sides going so maybe we can reach an agreement.

I say we carry on regardless and ignore what they say, seriously, this place is rather unique. Are we to go they way of Hardocp's off topic section and make it subscription only?

That sort of thing would do no good, we are of course open to anyone who wants to come here, they do not have to play by the same rules as us, if people want to they can just ignore us and do as they please, we can't actually do anything about that can we.

Because that would make sense.


As for subscribing, that might also work in that you would not need any special permission, but the first time you click on "other" to read it or to post, you will get the sign-up sheet that will have the warning that zpyrd is talking about.

So, don't restrict "other", just make it a little more idiot-proof (put a rope across the top of the stair with a sign that says "look out for rope". Anyone that trips........falls)
