I'm trying to decide on a quadro FX card for CAD / 3dsmax. From my research I have concluded that the best price/performance model of quadro FX is the 1500 model. There are models like 3400 and 3450 that you'd expect logicallly to perform better. But their throughput figures are like 20MB/s while the 256bit 1500 does 40MB/s, however the I think the reason the 3400/3450 are named as they are is because of their mem/gpu frequencies 650/450 or something like that, compared to 625/325 below.

The difference between the below is 2 cards is 128bit and 256bit memory pipeline.

256MB PNY Quadro FX1500 PVE PCI-E (x16) 256Bit 625MHz GDDR3, 325MHz GPU

256MB PNY Quadro FX1500 PCI-E (x16) 128Bit 625 MHz GDDR3, 325 MHz GPU

Have a look at this tables on the nVidia site for the mid range cards:
http://www.nvidia.com/page/qfx_mr.html

It shows that the 1500 is faster than the 3450 Confused

Could someone be so kind as to clarify my confusion or perhaps one aspect of my confusion would be cleared up by answering what's more important mem/gpu frequencies or mem throughput/bandwidth. Probably both!

Much appreciated.

Ok look i don't really use professional gpus like quadro but i pretty strong in the desktop gpu area. What i know is this: the memory bus width is very important and plays a basic role in a cards theoritical GB/s. But what i saw is that 1500 and 3450 are both 256 bit :? I can't say that difference in performance looks weird to me. Memory speed plays it's role also and don't forget this: 1500 may have lower GB/s rate but still be competitive. That happened also in the past with 7800 GTX 512 which had more GB/s than 7900 . But 7900 was faster beside that. So what i see as their big diff is that 3450 supports SLI. As i said though, i'm a noob in this sector so you'll need someone more experienced to really count on.

After checking both cards, here's what i discovered:
3450 FSAA=12x and SLI
1500 FSAA=8x but no SLI

3450 have more scalability than the 1500 since it can be combined with another 3450 for extra processing capabilities.
Since the 3450 have larger max FSAA probably it generates better quality image frames.

If you just want to have a single card for 3ds and acad then the 1500 is a great card.

Hey guys thank you for all your explanations and advice. I went for the 1500 in the end. I'll let you know what the build is like hopefully. It'll probably be another week or so though.
