I've had my home LAN running for several years now and have never seen this problem. I'll be browsing the internet, and all of the sudden I get the little prompt in the task bar that says, "Internet cable is unplugged", and of course will lose the connection. After maybe 10-30 seconds the connection is re-established. This last time it happened, I noticed that my Netgear FVS318 Router lit all 8 LEDs (port LED indicators) and the TEST LED when the connection was dropped. I've never had this happened. What is really weird, is that I built a new system for a friend and he had the same thing happening to him and he doesn't have a router. So what could this be?
I'm wondering about the CAT-5 cables, but I doubt its that because my friend had the same problem with a new cable. My computers on the LAN are:
1. Asus P4PE, P4 2.8 GHz, 1x512 Corsair XMS PC3200, ATI 9700 Pro, Antec True480 PS, WinXP Pro
2. Asus A7N8X, AMD XP+2500, 2x512 Corsair XMS PC3200, Ti 4200 (Siluro), WinXP Pro
Could this have something to do with Norton AV and ZoneAlarm? I've noticed a long 20 second delay when booting into Windows because of ZoneAlarm. Or is this problem likely to be a WinXP bug?
I don't have time for all I want to say.. here's the quick part.
Disable your antivirus/firewall programs. bypass your router/switch if possible. Test that, if it works, enable your virusscan/firewall software.. test that. last, hook up your router/switch, test that.
I'm guessing it'll be your router/switch giving you a problem. Your CAT5 cables may be degrading or EMIs/attenuation is causing you a problem. Before you go out and spend any money, try setting your NIC to 100-Full. A restart may be required. Test that out. Try a different port on your router/switch and if all else fails, try a different network cable. Give that a shot and let us know what happens with the troubleshooting.
Lastly, make sure you have all your updates for WinXP, try disabling the built in WinXP firewall too.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I've been in Las Vegas all week for training (work).
Anyway, the difficult part is that it doesn't happen all the time. And if I bypass the router, then I'll have to keep ZoneAlarm Pro running which prevents me from playing some games, so normally I shut it down. Now the last time I shut down ZA and bypassed the router, I immediately got hit with the Blaster virus. Luckily, NAV caught it.
But, I really suspect its either the CAT-5 cable or something goofy with WinXP. Because my router is almost brand new and the problem was also seen on my friends computer in Tenessee...
