I am 80% positive on getting a E6300
& 101% positive on getting a 680i board(which make & model i do not know yet)
I plan to overclock them.. of course. but i would really like to know roughly how far i can go.. so if u own a E6300 & a 680i board PLEASE POST UR RESULTS HERE... ur memory, mb, fsb, ratio, vcore and all that stuff
Right now I'd spend the little extra cash and get the e6400. The 680i is more feature rich than the other 600 series for the nvidia chipset, so why waste all that money on a feature rich board, to get a lower end e6300 cpu?
I think its literally just $20 more for the e6400 right now on newegg. Might be different where you shop however.
As far as overclocks go, I've read good things for the nvidia 6xx series. So goodluck
i myself have an e6400 with a ds3 at a max oc of 3.336 ghz at 1.2815 vcore. my memory is at 2.0. I know you said you were going to get an e6300 and a 680i but this might change your mind. also it does have some people who used a 680i.

I just purchased an e4300 and a striker extreme. I just went with the 4300 because of the excellent reviews from Toms and Anandtech. I personally don't care about achieving the highest overclock possible. As it was stated in Toms article, the e4300 runs cooler than the 6300 and that is what matters most to myself. A cooler running processor is going to last longer. I would push you towards the e4300. $190 at zipzoomfly.com
I would have to say that the combination you chose may be a bit lopped sided. The eVGA 680i board has proven to go to (or very close to) 600MHz FSB... something the e6300 cannot do without AMAZING cooling if at all...well maybe for a quickie.
From the articles I have read on overclocking the 680i - there were never any mention of an e6300 as a test subject... seems they have always been paired with X6800's or Qx6700's... which I assume is the reason for this post.
I think your a brave soul for trying this. Keep a fire extinguisher around.
Get the Xeon 3040 for $3 more. Its the same chip, but generally the Xeon server processors are a bit higher quality chips than the regular desktop versions. I just got mine and am loving it.
I have the eVGA 680i and the E6300. I think it is a great setup and was able to get some good OCing results.
Currently I have it running a 3.15ghz
vcore = 1.2875
FSB = 1800(450mhz) cpu multiplier @ 7x
memory = 900mhz in unlinked mode using Corsair XMS2 PC6400 2x 512mb with 5-5-5-15 timings
If your just planing on taking the FSB to 333mhz then you should be ok on stock voltages. I have noticed that the mobo tends to set voltages a bit high when set on auto.
Once you set it and run some initial tests you might lower the vcore back to stock or lower than stock and retest for stability. This will also help with keeping the temps low.
Depending on how much work you want to do you could also tighten the timing on your ram for better preformance. The timings will vary from different chip manufacturers.
This forum is full of odd information. Firstly, the links that nick showed us do not show us the true power of the newly release 4300. The THG link he showed was of the 6300. The andtech review was a 4300 engineering sample. They don't always act like the retail product. Also I never said not to get the 6300. It is indisputably the best Core 2 Duo oc chip. I recommend the striker because for the extra 150 dollars compared to the evga model you get mobo cooling which is really priceless when trying to oc. Also to bozz you might be able to get a little higher than 333 on stock. Also to the person with the post before me, RAM TIMING TIGHTENING IS STUPID, TIME CONSUMING, AND PAINSTAKINGLY SLOW TO DO! No offense to you but for such a minimal increase there is no need to tweak timings. Unless you are reaching an oc roadblock there is no need to change ram timings.
Well as far as tightened timings go I'd have to agree with you. Bozz did ask about timings and I responed but you can get a slight preformance gain by doing so. I myself don't mess with timings to much. With good timing you can oc your ram more as I have oc'ed my ram from 800mhz to 900mhz using 5-5-5-15 timing.
Thanks a bunch for the valued advice gents! I was just going to go into my bios and set fsb to 333 and let everything else automaticly follow! (Ram & cpu) Did you say that the mobo will also jump the voltages on the cpu when set to auto?
