I just acquired an Asus A8N-SLI Premium mobo. Will use Opteron 154 w/4x512 Ballistix, (3) 36GB Raptor + (1) 150GB Raptor (non-RAID).

The Asus manual has an inserted Tech Update page stipulating "preferred" SATA channel for OS drive: ie: for 3 or 4 SATA drives use channel 3 for OS install.

Anyone know why this is so, and what possible difference would this configuration make? It seems illogical that a 4 port SATA controller (either NVidia or SiliconImage) would somehow permit the OS I/O to perform "better" on one channel versus any other, with this determination being governed by the total number of SATA drives and, just which channels are used for connections.

Separately, what da' F is the difference between OS I/O and any/all other disk I/O?
