I just acquired an Asus A8N-SLI Premium mobo. Will use Opteron 154 w/4x512 Ballistix, (3) 36GB Raptor + (1) 150GB Raptor (non-RAID).
The Asus manual has an inserted Tech Update page stipulating "preferred" SATA channel for OS drive: ie: for 3 or 4 SATA drives use channel 3 for OS install.
Anyone know why this is so, and what possible difference would this configuration make? It seems illogical that a 4 port SATA controller (either NVidia or SiliconImage) would somehow permit the OS I/O to perform "better" on one channel versus any other, with this determination being governed by the total number of SATA drives and, justwhich channels are used for connections.
Separately, what da' F is the difference between OS I/O and any/all other disk I/O?
