Eric,
Your if your TV is widescreen (16:9) then what do you expect? To view
a 4:3 image you're going to have to have black/grey bars on the
left/right side or someing is going to get lopped off. The "4:3
Expanded mode" on your set fills the entire display and only cutts off
a small portion of the top and bottom. You get that strange stretch
effect on the left and right as a result, but this is the best this or
any TV really can do.
The only thing you can do in the Hitachi service menu (which may help
matters) is to get rid of the grey bars and make them default to
black. This is still just framing a 4:3 image, which is the proper
aspect anyway.
