im only geting sound out of the right speakers

Ive got a cord that on one end has a computer speaker jack that is plugged into my motherboard soundcard. The other end of the cord is R audio and L audio but in only getting sound out of one speaker. Do I need to get a soundcard that has L audio and R audio on it to get it to play on both speakers? If so can I get some recommendations?

If you have any other speakers in the house, use them to test to see if the problem is soundcard related or speaker related.

And after that, replace the necessary item.

The cable you've got is the right one but probably faulty.
