Okay, since it's a dated platform, prices aren't cheap and availability isn't great. Since it's your sis's machine, i'll assume that utmost performance isn't a big factor, and price is. Hope i'm not wrong? :?

Biostar P4M80-M4: Cheap. Uses the VIA P4M800 chipset(ok, but not great).Has everything you'll need, but only 2 DIMM slots(for RAM).

Intel BOXD865GLC: Has everything you'll need and more. Uses the i865 chipset(very good) giving dual-channel RAM support..and Intel boards are generally well built and stable. A little more money, but i'd pick it for a cheap non-overclocking machine.

If you'd rather buy from Newegg, the only decent S478 board they carry is also the Biostar P4M80-M4. It's $1 more than ZipZoomFly, plus no free shipping.

How much would fit on a mATX, lets say the Intel BOXD865GLC:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Prod [...] ode=241316

This is what it says on Intel's Manufacturer Product Specifications:
Eight USB ports
One serial port
One parallel port
Two Serial ATA IDE interfaces
Two parallel ATA IDE interfaces with UDMA 33, ATA-66/100 support
One diskette drive interface
PS/2* keyboard and mouse ports

Would that be enough for:
floppydrive, cd-rom-drive, cd-burner and after that how many ATA and SATA hard drives?

2 PATA, and 2 SATA drives.

2 PATA, and 2 SATA drives.

What is PATA then? Is PATA for everything, cd-drive, cd/dvd-burner and ATA hard drives? Does that mean that there is no space for any ATA drives since the 2 PATA already is for cd-rom and cd-burner?

Does that mean that there is no space for any ATA drives since the 2 PATA already is for cd-rom and cd-burner?Yes and no.PATA is Parallel ATA(data only flows one way at a time). IDE HD's, almost all CD/DVD ROM's and burners are PATA. SATA is serial ATA. Data can flow both ways simultaneously. Most(not all) new drives are SATA, and a few companies are starting to manufacture SATA Optical drives(CD/DVD). With SATA, you can only have one "unit"(HD/DVD) per cable. With PATA, you can have 2 "units"/cable...slave and master. That motherboard has 2 SATA..thus 2 SATA units can be used. It also has 2 PATA connectors(2x2=4), so you have 2 PATA channels...each with a master/slave.....so 1xCD-ROM, IxCD-Burner, 2 x IDE hard drives. GL :)
