I have an Intel E6600 C2D on a ASUS p5n SLI mobo with an NZXT 500 watt psu. I have overclocked it to 2.7 GHz but I can get it any higher. It is running between 38 and 40 degrees C. Is there any logical reason of why it can only be OCed to 2.7? What is the problem? Why wont it break 3 GHz?

are u running the ram divider to make it 800 @ stock?

if so when you start to push the fsb up goes the ram speed....

Just a check.....do you have the ram set to spd

Under chipset make sure that asus bottleneck optimization off....it can stop overclocking....

under ai overclocking you have manual set....
under there you have the ram set to whatever it needs....(some need 2.0 to 2.2 to get higher...)
then you set your fsb up a bit at a time till it wont go no more....

Also use core temp for temperatures....its more accurate

Can you post all settings you changed....

EDIT....

this is all assuming that the P5n has similar settings....

Also the p5n sli does not overclock that well....so it may be that...either way @ 2.7 its still quite a fast system

the ram is at 800 MHz even and the frequency is set at 1200 which is all it will do. i was sort of thinking that it was the motherboard that was keeping it from going up any higher. thanks, i guess that i just have to stay satified with 2.7. Thanks for the advice, I will try it, but I doubt that will make any difference.

Disable any automatic overclocking in the bios or software.

Set the ram divider to 1:1 or 533.

Bump the Vcore to 1.4V.

Set the fsb @ 333MHz, and you should be at 3GHz!

What is the +12V amperage on your PSU?
Also, check the voltage for your ram.
I think most Corsair DDR2 800 is 2.1V or 2.2V.

Just in case you haven't found it, this is the C2D OC stickie.
It gives a good brakedown of the OC procedure.

-Best luck
