Now that I'm into gaming, I decided that it's time for me to upgrade my network. You know that whole ping and lag issue. Anyways, I upgraded my internet connection to SBC Elite and now it's really fast but it seems that still worried that I'm not fully using the networks high speed capability. So I wanted to upgrade my modem, I don't know what is. It's very old, about 4 years now. I upgraded the router already and now I have the D-Link gaming router, but I'm afraid that maybe my modem is now chocking the bandwith.
So can anyone give an advice of what kind of DSL/ADSL modem I should be looking into? I want something fast but also affordable as in around $100 price range. Thanks.
Okay thanks, I did and it says 24Mb and 1.5Mb don't know much about what this stands for. But my connection is SBC Yahoo Elite with up to 2.5Mb speed, again do not know what it stands for. So would an upgrade of the modem to let say a "gaming modem" improve bandwith?
Need to look at the speeds of your modem 25mbps is your down speed, where I would guess 1.5 is up load speed. Most case this will be ok. Need to verify this 1.5 up speed and compare to your yahoo up load speed. In most cases up is lower than down unless they say they have semetric service.
Doubtful that it's symmetric at 2.5. 2.5 is probably ADSL, SDSL usually tops out around 1.1 to 1.5 mbps. So, upgrading your modem probably won't help you. For gaming, the most important thing is not really bandwidth but latency. You can game just fine on half a megabit if you have good ping times. So you may want to look at your ping times to some servers you play on and then ask some of your friends that live in the same area but have different ISPs to tell you what kind of ping times they get. If theirs are lower then switching ISPs may give you a better overall result.
