Possible keyboard port damage?

Hi, sorry if this is a common post.

I tried to install a new wireless keyboard and mouse combo but the keyboard just did not work well with extra characters when typing and so forth. (The wireless mouse also sent my PC into Standby mode repeatedly).

I replaced that with a normal PS2 keyboard and that too types poorly.

As a last resort I am now using a USB keyboard again.

It seems that the keyboard port may be damaged though I always power down when removing or installing PS2 type keyboards.

Anyone else had this experience or know a solution?

Yes, I have damaged a PS2 port by using a shorted adaptor. From that point only USB keyboards and mice would work. If the damage is bad enough to completely fry the keyboard interface you can also lose ALL keyboard functionality, including USB. That being said, indeed make certain it's not a software issue.
