which processor would you buy for an OC system to 3GHz+

ARGH! ARGH! MY BRAIN! ARGH! It hurts so bad... please, someone... help me stop the pain...

My internal conversation with myself for the past few days has been along the lines of: "Get the E4300. It's a better OCer. Get the E6400. It's a more mature chip. Get the E4300. It's a better OCer. Get the E6400. It's a more mature chip. Get the E4300. It's a better OCer. Get the E6400. It's a more mature chip. Get the E4300. It's a better OCer. Get the E6400. It's a more mature chip. Get the E4300. It's a better OCer. Get the E6400. It's a more mature chip. Get the E4300. It's a better OCer. Get the E6400. It's a more mature chip. Get the E4300. It's a better OCer. Get the E6400. It's a more mature chip. Get the E4300. It's a better OCer. Get the E6400. It's a more mature chip. Get the E4300. It's a better OCer. Get the E6400. It's a more mature chip." etc etc.

I just CANNOT make my mind up... I'm leaning towards the E4300... But omg! Now I'm leaning towards the E6400! woah! Back again.... and again... tick tock tick tock, almost like a metronome...

What would you do? Hmmm.... maybe I'll do a poll...

I doubt it being a "more mature chip" will affect much.

Since you're planning to overclock, I would definately choose the E4300 for its higher 9x multiplier (vs. 8x), lower stock FSB, and cheaper price.

Bumping from 200Mhz to 266Mhz should pose no problem, and from there you're starting off from E6600 specs, save the 2Mb less cache.

I believe sites have already gotten the E4300 firmly past 3Ghz with a much more managable 333Mhz FSB than the E6400's required 375Mhz FSB. It allows for cheaper RAM, cheaper Motherboard, etc. etc. and even starts out cheaper as a bonus.

I think you have to reduce the clock on your brain. It's way too overclocked. :D

i would rather pick the E6400 if OCing is not applied.
But damn... that OC result on E4300 !!! Well, got to give the way to E4300 OCed then...

E4300 is more woth for the money. It doesn't require expencive stuff for OC-ing. So, I voted for E4300.

Anyway, E6400 should be better OC-er, but that depends of luck. Some chips are more OC-able the others. If you are not lucky then your E4300 might not be stable at 3GHz.

I would get the E6400, higher clock speed and the same multi. But the E4300 is sure tempting. You could get both, see which one oc's better, then return the other one.

If you're overclocking, E4300 hands down. It's just made for it, there's already lots of sites with it doing crazy stuff very easily. That said, I've got the same RAM and proc as in your sig @3.2 and I'm very pleased with it. There again I didn't know about the E4300 when I got it:)

E4300 has 9x multiplier, E6400 has 8x.

I would definitely go with the E4300. My cash flow is not that great since i'm a student at college but I still do want a decent system to play occasional games.

I went with the E4300 and couldn't be happier. Overclocked to 3.4ghz (~1550mhz FSB). Everything runs perfectly smooth and the chip doesn't get that hot. Definately THE setup right now.

Bus speed is the reason the E4300 is a good overclocker.

At stock:

E4300=9x200=1800MHz
E6300=7x266=1862MHz

Both can be overclocked to a 333MHz bus speed:

E4300=9x333=3000MHz
E6300=7x333=2331MHz

I don't see why not..it's basically the same chip with a 800mhz FSB. My E4300 dropped into my Gigabyte board that only had the F3 (aka older) BIOS.

I can't say. If you already own the P5B, then flash it. If are thinking of buying it, then consider the P5B-E. It seems like a lot of people complain about the vanilla version.

You should wait at least another week or two. I think.......the prices on these chips are supposed to drop. I heard the 4300 will be going for as low as $130 bucks.

The P5B has been sitting in my closet since September. But it would be nice to just drop in a E4300 for about $130 without a bios flash, since I don't know how to do it without removing my E6600 from my gaming computer and adding it to the P5B just to flash bios.

Would be a nice upgrade to my aging Athlon 64 3200+.

The normal selling price for the E4300 is $163. It will drop to $133 in the fall, Q3 2007. It will probably take a few weeks before retailers stop charging a premium for it.

Correction, it's $163 for 1000 cpus. Retailers have to make a profit so they make it up some...I think $170-$175 will be the going price.

E6400; theorically more highly binned, better stock performance so if ti sucks in overclocking you still have a great chip by itself.

Well... Thanks for all the input, chaps... I cancelled my E6400 order and placed one for the E4300. I'm gonna OC the tits off this thing when I get it! :p  Unfortunately, suppliers here in Denmark are severely lacking the X1950 Pro I'm planning on getting, so I have to wait at least 14 days before I can build the thing. Boo hoo. :cry: 

I'm thinking of making a video of the whole process of building and OCing to put on YouTube... Could be interesting :)

No, $163 is supposed to be the retail price. You can refer to the following article:

The E6400 is currently $222 at newegg.com, and before a $5 spike, newegg was selling the the E6300 for $183.

Yet not one E4300 has failed to break 3GHz... really, ALL C2Ds are damn overclockable, you may as well get the cheapest one, and with the 9x multiplier to boot.
