My current DVD-RW optical sounds like a jet engine when it gets going, so I want a new one.

It has to be QUIET. IDE is fine. Black preferred. Don't care about Lightscribe.

they all make too much sound,
the only way to get it quiet is by slowing down the drive

Well, I plan on using some noiseproofing pads in my new case, but there must be some brand that's better than others?

As for slowing it down, naw.......otherwise I'd also go back my old Athlon 2500 ;) Fast and Forward! :)

I've had two NEC drives and for me they've both been quieter than average.

I used an NEC in a friend's build and wasn't terribly impressed. But maybe that's because I got him the cheapest one they had LOL.

I believe they were a 3500A and a 3540A

For anything that spins, fast = noise. You can't expect a tiny tiny motor to spin a disc at 5-7k rpms and not make noise.

I have a Samsung drive, and it is pretty dang quiet. Not sure which model; had it over a year.

I understand. I should rephrase I guess: I'm looking for a model that is quieter.

Rubix, I've been reading the Samsung SH-S182 is good, you got that one by any chance?

I'vo got myself Samsung SH-S182. Other than some quirk (can't read some cd/dvd), i'm impressed by its performance and quiteness..

It could be...I haven't taken the time to find out. I have had it for about a year and 1/2 or so...it has a black bezel. I might have to go do some quick research for you, will repost later with that.
