Forum Graphics & Displays : AMD Radeon round n round the ATI bush..X19????

ahhh like others that have their heads spinning with what Mobo, which C2D mine is what video card...

Well for a start Ive narrowed it down to Radeon based. Ya. Rest of the relevant hardware Ill be getting:

Asus P5B Deluxe
Intel E6400
Crucial 2x1GB Ballistix Tracer (4-4-4-12)
Corsair HX620 PSU

So im just compiling the last of my list and checking prices when I get to video. In in UK atm and was undecided between 256 X1950XT and the 512 X1950Pro as per
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Pro [...] tID=521951
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Pro [...] tID=495276

I was leaning towards the Pro as its a little cheaper and has more flexibility if I wanted to XF later (form my research the PSU is good enough) Then I find this option
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Pro [...] tID=335772
which falls somewhere in the middle....so my questions

If my purchase is based on a solo card which is best, the 1950XT or 1900XT seeing as the 1900 has 512mb ram?
If theres a good chance for XF what about the Pro?

Lastly are any of these 3 good for OC'ing and is it worth it?

Ive usually gone away and researched info on parts, like the list above but this video issue has made hit a wall,.... help!!!!!
Any feedback, opinions greatly appreciated :). Ive used this forum a few times to help make decisions and has been great help.

Cheers, Ima (still a newb)

its not the ram its how you use it. I know. Its an arguable statement. But I really doubt, that all that ram (if you Crossfire two 512 mb cards) can be put to a good use in the next year or two.

1950 is a somewhat newer core, with a newer tech process which means smaller size, less heat, and less power required.

EDIT:

Nvidia cards from the same price range are rumored to be better overclockers.

Between the 1950xt and 1950Pro I'd say the XT will outperform the Pro in everything. It has more shaders etc and is just a stronger card. The 512mb Ram won't make enough difference to catch up to the XT. If you can get the XT, since its a little higher, it would be my choice.

Now as for the 1950xt vs the 1900xt, they are the same price even though the 1900xt has 512mb ram. Now heres the thing, 1900xt has much lower memory clock stock. Its possible it can be OC to the same as the 1950xt HOWEVER, ATI cards in this range are not known to be as good OCers as the Nvidia equivalent. I would go for the 1950XT as its stronger card stock and again the 512mb from the other card will not normally close the gap given the higher clock.

Hope that wasn't confusing. 1950XT gets the nod.

EDIT: As far as Nvidia cards go I believe the 7950GT (not the GX2) is comparable. It trails the 1950XT in most benchmarks however as the poster mentioned above it is generally a much more OCable card. If you are willing to OC it you will get similar performance in pretty much everything but Oblivion where the ATI card still triumphs.

Crossfire and SLI do not add the memory; two 512MB cards do not make 1GB of usable video memory.
