...it's all over the place. I have been running a LAN for a few years using the ubiquitous MSHOME for, mainly, basic File & Printer sharing.

I have a couple of wireless notebooks and a couple of Desktops with XP Pro using a Netgear WGT624 with ADSL modem. Fortunately Internet access still works fine.

Over the past year I noticed that one of the Notebooks and one of the Desktops no longer allowed access to shared files. Apart from being annoying I managed around the problem but now I have lost Printer sharing.

I have tried running the Set up Wizard again, but to no avail. How can I start over, there seems to be no way to Delete MSHOME or other workgroup.

If I think back, my problem may have started because I started investigating Domains, but the memory's not good!

Any help/guidance much appreciated.

Cheers

Alan

Do you have Windows Firewall or any oother security software enabled on any of the PCs? You can check this in Control Panel. It has a nasty habit of enabling itself when you upgrade to SP2, even if you've manually turned it off someone else may have turned it on if the computer prompted them about it.

What happens if you try to share to one of the affected PCs by typing \\<ip addr} into Windows Explorer? Do you get a list of shared folders/printers?

Is File & Printer Sharing bound to your NIC?

Yes I do have McAffee but even turning this off does not seem to resolve it. I do have it set to allow my LAN through.

Yes that works fine, but still wont allow me to see some shared folders.

Not sure I quite understand that. How or where can I look to see/change that situation?

That's weird. Do you mean you can see some shares on a particular computer, but not all of them? Or can you see all shares on one computer but none on another?

If you can see shares, then File & Printer sharing is bound to your NIC, you don't need to check it.

Absolutely, some shares I can see, some I cant, even the so called SharedDocs folder! I have checked/double checked and it says they are shared!

Interestingly when I go via the ip address it shows all the folders that are shared its just I cant see some of them!

I had missed something you need to rt click on MY Computer then you can make the changes. With all of the wierd things going on. It almost sound like multilple users with differnet rights are envolved. Shut down sharing make the changes. Reboot. Start sharing backup, see if this clears it up.

There has been a few instances that the shared PC NAME BE a Single Word with no spaces. Particurly if working with latency OS.

Thanks, I had RC > Properties but I can NOT remove a workgroup just change the name.

Are you saying RC > Manage?

Cheers, Alan

Reply to alanparrott

You are required to have a group name if networking is active.

RC Manage NO LEAVE OFF

You're contradicting yourself here. Are you saying you can see all of the shares but cannot access some of them? In my terminology, seeing a share and accessing it are two different things.

I'm assuming you have simple file sharing turned on, I.E. you don't have a permissions tab when you do RC => Properties on a shared folder.

Fred, thank you, I think you have helped me solve it!

I was trying to say that only the Shared Folders displayed but only some of them could be accessed.

When I RC > Properties I do have a Permissions Tab. I think what has happened that last year I started playing with ASPNET and I made some changes and in the mix of some folders I removed certain permissions. I have just removed them all for one folder and replaced it with Everyone and that seems to have fixed it. I think i will review all my shares and see whats what! How do I just revert to Simple Sharing?

I also remember trying to get certain PCs to get asked for a Password when they tried to connect. I never got that to work, but once again I probably messed up trying.

Once again thanks to you and Blue for sticking with me, it is very much appreciated.

Kind Regards, Alan

Under folder options in Windows Explorer, near the bottom of the options list is the checkbox for simple file sharing.
