My P.C is running Win98 and it has gone corrupt. It is telling me I have to
reinstall Win98 but I don't have the CD. I want to upgrade to Win XP. Can I
upgrade even if my P.C hangs when I start in Win98.

Thank-You in advance

Tim.

Yes you can upgrade. But where are you getting the XP disk from? Is it a
retail version? Has the XP disk been used on another PC? If it has, you can
use it on only one PC. Best do a clean install, which means all your data,
personal files, photos, documents will be lost.

You should not upgrade over a corrupt and unstable system. Do a clean
install or repair 98 before the upgrade.

You can't upgrade without the qualifying program CD.

Hi,

The existing installation, even though corrupt, will be sufficient as a
qualifier. Personally, I would still do an upgrade as the core system files
are going to be replaced anyways. You can always go back and do a clean
install if it doesn't work.

Upgrading a 98 system usually requires much more than purchasing XP. Without
a 98 CD, you would need to get the full version, at least 256 meg of ram,
at least 10 gig of hard drive space, XP software upgrades and the result
will be an obsolete 98 system running XP. For close to the same cash, you
can get a much more powerful entry level system with XP.
Check eBay for Window98, you can pick one up very cheap.
