I have a P4 630 3.0ghz (lga775)in a Dimension 5100 right now, and want to know if I could just swap in a 6300-ish core 2 without much problem (assuming LGA775 is the same for both).

Thanks,
Robert

Know what chipset your computer uses? Probably not, though.

Intel 945 or 965 express. cant remember exactly which one - that machine's at home...

If it's a 965, you're in luck. 945 - out of luck.

PS - make sure your BIOS will support it. Dell can be a bitch with things like that.

what should I look for in the BIOS? I've gone into the setup, but there's nothing that I can tell that says "check here for core 2" or some similar kind of verbiage. THere definately dont seem to be any overclocking types of feature for the mobo.

There won't be any overclocking options in a Dell. I guess go online and make sure you have the latest BIOS installed, and see if there are release notes for the BIOS that say whether or not it will support C2D.

It says that it adds support for newer processors, so it's possible if it is indeed the 965 chipset. Just make sure you have it installed before you upgrade. May also need to reinstall Windows.

I just flashed it to newest version (A03). I'll have to read the docs.

Thanks,
Robert

The one you downloaded is even newer, good.

all the site says is this:
1. Improve keyboard parser buffer operation.
2. Allow USB Controller to be disabled.
3. Improve support for bootable optical drives.
4. Add new Service Tag editing feature.
5. Add support for VIIV logos.
6. Add PCI and Sigmatel support for for Vista.
7. Update the Copyright to 2006.
8. Add support for newer processors.
9. Improve S3 operation.
10.Improve PME functionality.
11.Correct size reporting in setup.
12.Improve PCIE detection algorithm.
13.Correct USB detach performance.
14.Improve stability when no boot device is present.

#8 sounds good, but there's no text file on the ftp site with details so who knows what it means....

Try googling to see if anyone else has done it.
