Once I remembered to solve the problems and not cause new ones, I approached the issue like a good problem solver....
Problem: After installing IE7 on the computer hard wired to the DMZ LAN port, I noticed my internet disconnecting. Also, connecting w/ my PSP (802.11b?) to the wi-fi with WEP shared key. These were the changes.
I want IE7 and internet on my PSP. So, I assumed the router would adjust. Obviously the majority of owners for this device did the same (complain about the device that sits in one spot, following instructions that we give them).
This is no good, but everyone does it. Problems occurred after a change, but we want to keep the changes.
So, I did simple stuff first. Verify settings, backup config, update firmwaare, new firmware did not reload old config, I cursed, then moved on, and rebuilt the configuration and read the help file in detail to optimize it.
Here's where I got caught, don't let it happen to you:
I started off with the di624 and a desktop w/ matching 108Mbps pci card.
DON'T FORGET THIS IS THE ONLY SETUP THAT THE ROUTER WILL PROPERLY PERFORM AT THE "108Mbps" that you expected it to be.
Just like RAM, or wired networking devices....IF I HAVE A 10Mbps NIC on the same network with the 3 other computers w/ 100Mbps nics on a 10/100 switch, network throughput is max 10Mbps.
Anyway, after many sleepless nights, and endless years in the field, I finallly have come to realize that I am understanding more advanced stages of networking and am learning more everyday....If I want to enhance my capabilities, I need to stop being so cheap w/ the equipment used in my HOME. I work on expensive equipment at work, I should match that equipment at home.
It's flat out embarassing fixing issues on a Sonicwall or Cisco router when I can't properly configure the one in my house.
