retrieve data from HD

hi all,
first, i want to run the disk defragmenter for my external 200G HD and in order to run the defragment process, the system will do the analyze on the HD first, during the system analyze up to 65% i go to click stop, after that my HD can not open and pop-up a message say do you want to format it?
So, anyone can help me on this how to retrieve my all data?still has the chance to save my all data back?

can you remove the drive from the external case?
if so, connect it to a internal IDE channel
use getdataback to try to recover everything

the data will still be there, but probably FAT table, or MBR completly **** up
