OK, stupid place to put this, but this has as little to do with computers as any other topic besides animal husbandry, so I figured one of you might know something about it...

I am (slowly) trying to pick up Acoustic guitar. I am muddling through the generic chords and strumming out a few nights a week to try to memorize what I can and build up those important finger calouses...

But the problem comes in finding some simple songs to play. I have been listening to my collection, trying to pick out somgs that have some clear, distinct chords to play, looking up the tabs online, and then trying to play them.

After attempting to break my pinky to get it to play the first chord of QotSA "No One Knows", and finding the tabulature for songs like "Squeezebox" not sounding right, I gave up last night and figured I would ask around.

Any suggestions on some relatively simple tunes that could help learn the chord progression for some of the more popular chords?

Try this guy.

Sign up for his tutorials, he sends a video every few days and ask you to buy the rest. Don't buy any, just wait and he keeps sending them! I've recommended him to a few people and they've all said he helps.

Speak to Jef, he's recently picked his guitar back up and is learning again.

Johnny Cash - Hurt one of my favourites

Dont get me wrong i can't play at all really but when i tried a few months back these were the ones i was trying to learn as they are mostly very simple.

When learning a new song, try finding a Tab and learn it to the point of playing along to a recording of the song.

Lots of guitar beginner, style, technique and learn how to play stuff on youtube.

Lots of Clapton's are easier to play than they sound.

What type of music do you listen to most?

Reply to Tom_Smart

Clapon songs are a great place to find material to learn and play. One of my fav Clapton songs to play. Find a Tab. Learn what you can, chord progression, small lead parts. Then try to play along to the song.

Cool, thanks, this does help.

The music I listen to derives mostly frmo 70's rock, but has an 80's alternative bent to it due to my suburban upbringing (REM, etc).

There are so many to say would be fun to play, but I listen to a lot...

Zep
REM
Green Day
Muse
ZZ Top
Buddy Guy
Santana
The Who
The Clash
Sex Pistols
T-Rex
Supergrass (AWESOME in live acoustic! Saw them at the Bowrey)
White Light Motorcade
Clapton
Hendrix
Vaughn
Queens of the Stone Age
Alien Ant Farm
Incubus
Tool (and all his permutations)
Beatles
Bowie
Costello
Skynyrd
Floyd
Stones

I could go on a lot, but the basis is 70's guitar rock, with little to do with the hair of the late 70's. Blues influence is strong, and so is R+B (Original JB and the like, not what they call R+B now...).

Some of my favorite acoustics would not be in my reach now (like Bron Ay Yur), but it would be a blast to be able to plug my way through some basics until I can play the tunes that give me shivers when I close my eyes and listen to them.....

Or am I the only one that has a weakness for a good tune? ;)

I like a good tune. I cry every time I hear Two Unlimited's No Limit. Seriously it's that sh!t.

I've recently had it pointed out to me that Metallica don't sound too bad acoustically. Fade To Black in particular sounds nice and is also a piece of piss to play too.

Reply to Tom_Smart

I guess the trick is, with many acoustic adaptations, is being able to hear it in the electric when you are comparing it...

Incubus had some REALLY good acoustic remixes of some of their tunes. Some are very similar to the electronic/electric compositions that were released on their albums, but some were different "A perfect Shade of Grey" I think was one they jokingly called "the lounge version".

BTW, strange happening, while trying to use the plugin spellchecker on Quick Reply, it kept jumping out of the box and started checking the NewEgg ad at the top (Can't find "intel", can't find "e6420" ).... strange....

I'm still working on just hitting my chords, but I am picking up my guitar a few times a week, which is better than when it was a few times a decade.

I did look up "Over the Hills and Far Away" and found that it wasn't nearly as complex as it sounded initially... Certainly not easy, but not too hard.

Tell me you mean the Led Zeppelin version of Over the Hills and Far Away. A lot of theirs is easier to play than it sounds.

Try Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You. It's basically Am, C, G. The picking is a very basic pattern too, so not to tricky to learn.

I had a guitar once. I was 16 and the only thing logically was to smash it "post encore" like.

I am however aiming to get one as soon as the light in my tunnel starts shining again.

You don't need no guitar to hate Scousers.

Reply to audiovoodoo

Well, the first three easy someone forwarded to me on YT were from this british guy.. Forget his name.

They were, if I remember right

Wild Thing
Knocking on Heavens Door
Hey Joe

Out of the three, I liked Hey Joe the best, although I still cannot progress with the actual score (strum strum, pause and change chord, strum strum, etc...).

Keep the suggestions coming. The more "words" I learn, the more the letters (chords) will mean to me.

How's about this. Sure, tons of echo, most of it from the "Live" recording, but you can't fake that work on the neck....

It probably was. Nick Drake died (suicide) aged twenty six in 1974. There is not a lot of footage of him about. I'm not concerned with the video, just his music.

I have heard them bit I'm not a massive fan.

Tommy Emmanuel is a Convict too, and fcuk me can he play.

I believe that there are two basic steps for anyone learning acoustic guitar.

One, Sell your car, house, wife, kids or whatever you have to do to get the best quality guitar you can. Seriously, having strings half an inch away from the fret board while you are still learning to hold them down to form chords is not going to you any favours.

Two, Sell your car, house, wife, kids or what ever you never sold to get the guitar. Seriously, now you have a nice guitar, what do you need them for?

Step two might be a little extreme for some, so instead you should get your head around the idea of Travis picking.

Just Google 'travis picking'. There are far too many pages out there for me to pick one. Look through a few and find one that suits your current understanding and skill level.

Tommy Emmanuel has some good advice too. He says, and is quite correct, that learning is all about repetition. When you learn a new song, play it over and over again. Every time you pick up the guitar play it, and then again and again.

Repetition is your best friend, it is very important to you. Not so important to your family though, they quickly tire of it.

This is why I feel step two is so important.;)

I play electric ... I have a few very good guitars.

I like acoustic too ... depend on my mood. My acoustics are all cheap but playable ... low action.

Been playing for 25 years.

Kids are into it too which is great

I own an electric, never touch the dame thing, will pick up and pick an acoustic very badly, problem is i never practice at one thing long enough to be good at it.

I would recommend an acoustic for learning on. Electric guitars, in the hands of a beginner, are very unforgiving. They tend to amplify every mistake and make dreadful screeching sounds.

Awful sounds, noise so bad it should only be listened to by death metal freaks. Most times it's only the inclusion of a drummer that distinguishes a death metal band from a novice and a loud amp.

Reply to Tom_Smart

Very true.

Mt RP50 pedal died last week and I am back to the basics - clean sound or the trusty waa waa.

Damn that is a hard pedal to master.

My old 50 watt Marshall is good for a bit of distortion (old lead combo) but it has a bit of hiss now - needs a service.

Otherwise I use my Yamaha 300W desk to pump the Jade speakers I have, and an old Ross 100W PA to drive the Bass cube I made.

We have two Bass guitars and a decent set of drums too ... good for jamm sessions.

We don't really play much loud stuff though ... unless the kids play on their own.

Then I usually go out.

Hoping to get a new pedal today ... I like chorus and a bit of delay.

Reply to reynod

I like giving people who are learning on an electric an acoustic with a wider neck.

Don't have any pedals, though Wally has a *** load.

I meant to look into software for playing around with the sound. I'll have to actually get around to that one day.

Reply to Tom_Smart

Had a jamm the other day with a mate - he brought over 2 X 12 string guitars. I don't have a 12 string so it was pretty weird to play ... at least the neck is quite wide.

Sounds so sweet when one plays Bm picking on the second fret while the other starts on the 7th doing the little flourishes.

Hotel California yeah ... man I love that song !!

I want a 12 string now ... with a pickup.

The Led Zep over the hills song I recall starts with a G ... here is the tabs for it.

Before playing the Bm for the start of HC I like to quickly tug and pull off a F# first before hammering on the Bm. Yeah, I'm aware of the abuse I'm going to get for that, but the guitarists here who are a little more accomplished will know what I mean.

I always kick off Over The Hill with the D, I though everyone did.

Edit for typo. See below.
