Hey all, i use my system for gaming, and my fps is way lower than i expected, (i.e. running hl2 ep1 at 15-30 as apposed to 60ish from toms charts.) So something is slowing down my fps alot, i believe it is my cpu, but it could be my ram, or even something else, any clues? :?

specs:
7600gs pci-e
Asrock 775Dual-VSTA
Celeron D 346 (256kb cache 8O , 533mhz fsb)
ddr pc3200 (2x512mb Dual channel)

any help would be welcome, thanks. :)

You can't expect your fps to be the same or in the neighborhood of those in reviews. They do benchmarks with mid-to-highend pcs.

Your mobo supports C2D. Why not upgrade the cpu to at least PD805? Or even e6300? If you can afford it. And the DDR2 5x512mb?

check in the bios if the gfx adapter is in pci, pcie or agp. Sometimes you need to set it to agp or pci even if you gfx card is pcie.
run a 3dmark and check the values.
Are you comparing with any 7600gs at 600mhz, 800mhz or 1400mhz? Because now they are very confusing.

Imagine my future CPU (e4300 probably) on it :) Not sure I will have the balls to lap the IHS on my new one, but if I catch a good deal on eBay for a 915 or Celeron D356 I plan on lapping and seeing what they will give me.

lapping? ehh...aint that dangerous. I gotta better idea...do something stupid (like me) remove the CPU sink and make it a direct die water block

Holy crap. That's one hell of an overclock. A very good example of what PD805 is capable of.

combat_deity, I forgot to tell you that you need a good psu for optimal fps. If the video is underpowered, the fps will drop.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=108088

That could be affecting it, i am using a pretty no name psu. i have ordered a new psu and cpu to see if that fixes my fps woes.

PSU (any opinions on it?)
and a pentium D 925 as i said before.

hopefully that will sort out my fps, but i would have though my ram would have been holding it back, either way some ddr2 sticks in the future cant hurt can it? :p

thanks for the responses guys .

Why waste money on any of the Pentium D's when you can just get a Conroe chip? It's just that the Pentium D's will need to be double the clock speed to compete with the Core 2's, so, I would go with a 6300 or a 4300 if I were you.

Well,

It's my opinion that a PSU causes stability problems, and not FPS problems. If it were my choice, I would buy the E4300 or 6300. What PSU do you have?

ok.. first off a pentium d 925 cost 130$.. save up another 40$ (2 x 20 dollar bills) shouldnt be that bad to save if u got a job. and that will give u about 170 for one of the e4300's which should smoke with its 9x multiplier.. plus it will burn ur d925 alive for fps.

Even though your PCI-E is 4x, it's NOT 25% slower than PCI-E 16x.

I spent along time finding that out :? ,and it is said only to affect noticably higher powered cards, a 7600gs isnt that high powered really.

My current psu is a no-name brand, i'm suprised it hasn't died to be honest XD.

Ive decided to save up for some ddr2 5300 as well.

thanks for the help :)

EDIT: in case any of you are wondering, i installed the psu and cpu, my fps has jumped MASSIVELY, i mean from 15-30 to 60-80. nice. :)
