What exactly happens when your PSU can't handle a new component? Is it just stability that suffers (random shutdowns) or could you do some damage?

Reason is, it looks like my new CPU will be arriving a few days before the new PSU and I don't really feel like waiting 5 days with the CPU already in hand.

I'm not too sure an athlon 64 x2 4800+ takes that much more power than an athlon 64 3500+ anyways...

CPU would be a 4800+ x2 athlon 64
1 HDD, 80 GB
2 optical drives
1 x700 pro vid card (a second PCI vid card for a third moniter for trading stocks during the day, a cheapie ATI card)
TV tuner (only used when the cheaper vid card is disabled when I dual boot into my media center OS)

The PSU is a 230 W generic the PC builder put in about 20 months ago.
