still having a few glitches with my system seems to be either motherboard or processor . am considering whether to buy a new board but was wondering
if the fact that i haven't updated the bios may be causing these problems? have never done it before so have been reluctant, is there a chance it will mess my system up completely or is flashing the bios something different?

Updating the Bios will fix some glitches. Look at the various Bios revisions.
If the power goes off while you are flashing your computer will be unbootable. You have the option of using a Bios recovery CD or emergency bios chip in the motherboard or else you would have to remove the Bios chip and buy another one, as long as it is not not soldered in. If it is soldered in, you would need a new motherboard all together.
