Simple problem. I have a number of PCs on a network with XP, 2000, 98, etc. Some of them will only see the others if I use the IP address. Is this a WINS problem? Netbios is enabled but it still won't see them. It's been awhile since I've messed with it so I'm at a loss. It used to work fine, not sure what happened. Thanks.
It's a Local DNS Problem, NetBIOS problem. Some times router store this info. You may need to flush some cache and force a new read. Generally you have to reboot the pc for it to be re-registered.
You haven't mentioned what type of network topology you have, but if everything is on a single segment/subnet with no routers in between, they should all be able to see each other through the netbios broadcasts.
Once thing you might try is disabling the browser service on all but one computer. It's possible they are fighting over the master browser role, which can cause name resolution problems.
DNS typically only affects domain environments, and WINS is just really old and not used much anymore. If none of that works, you could always sink to using the hosts file...
