I have a cable connection and I use a thomson modem and a LinkSys BEFSX41 router, sometime ago I made a reset to my router, and from then on, I couldn't connect to the internet through the router, my only option is to connect the modem directly to the PC.
when I have the modem connected to the pc and I make IPCONFIG, i get the subnet mask as 255.255.254.0, but when I connect the router and I go to the configuration page I only have 6 or 7 predefined subnet mask options and none of them is the one that the modem use, and I can't add a new one to the list.
(I think the problem lies there, but I'm not really sure)
does anyone know how can I reconfigure my router so I can be able to connect to the net through the router?
The subnet mask isn't what's causing your problem. The options you have in the router are for the LAN side, whereas the mask you see on your PC would go to the WAN side of the router, typically through DHCP.
On the router, you probably want to keep the default 255.255.255.0 for the LAN and make sure the WAN is set to automatically retrieve an IP from your ISP.
When you put the router in the mix and nothing works, you need to do some troubleshooting. I'd start something like this...
1) Getting an IP from the router/have an IP statically assigned?
2) Can I ping the router?
3) Can I log into the router?
4) Is the router getting an IP from the ISP (typically shown on status or WAN page)
5) Can I ping the IP the router got from the ISP?
6) Can I ping the default gateway the router got from the ISP?
7) Can I ping 216.239.51.104 (google)?
8) Can i ping WWW.GOOGLE.COM?
If you answer those questions, we will be able to tell you where the problem lies.
One thing I should note is that your cable modem is probably restricting you to one MAC address, so if you connect your PC and get online, then connect the router, the cable modem is going to see a new MAC address and will probably not let it get an IP address. You can get around this by unplugging the cable modem for a few seconds when you change what you have connected to it.
