I just got the newest 60" XBR® Grand WEGA™ KDF-60XBR950, overall i's
say i'm not impressed with the picture quality, the model at the high
end a/v store in my neighborhood, on display, had been color
calibraterd by a pro, and it looked very nice, the colors and the
image were both crisp.
At home my TV looks grainy, i realize its a big TV and i'm only
sitting about 6.5 feet away but i feel it lacks sharpness of picture.
For example if the was an image of a person's face is on the screen
and in the background there is a solid color, around that persons'
ears and cheeks, basiclly the whole outline of the persons face you
would see that the line is not smooth its blocky resembling a
staircase,
I also purchased VOOM as my SAT provider in hopes that HD images would
be even more sharp, as the advertise HD images are like 30 times
better than that of DVD's, but its not to great of an improvment,
The Electronic store near me had the TV set up with an HD feed for
display and the damn TV looks great, at home its mediocre at best, its
still just out of the box, maybe a pro could give me better advise, i
just thought i post on here and see if any one has the TV or the 70"
version, and an HD signal. And what their feedback was.
All my components are high end all my interconnects are high end, the
VOOM menu looks sharp at least, Great!! Damn TV!!
Any info would be great.
Thanks in advance

First off, you're only 6.5 feet away and you got a 60" TV?!? What the hell?
Did you insist on buying this TV and the salesman's advice just went in one
ear and out the other? Or did noone tell you that you're too close for a 60"
TV? If you're sitting that close to your TV, even a 42" is almost too big. I
would look at something like a 32" or a 37" plasma or LCD, maybe the Sony
42WE610 LCD rear projection. Or even the Sony 34XBR910 tube TV. Most places
are doing this with a free stand.

You may be seeing the "screen door" effect, which is where you would resolve
individual pixels. You should back off to the point where the screen is just
smooth color. I watch my 60" XBR at 8 ft in one La-Z-Boy and 9" in the
other, and find the detail I see in HD very satisfying. Of course, analog
will always have a grainy, slightly snowy picture, and you'll probably still
be able to see some grain off a DVD, but full-blown HD should be free of
grain and pixilization. Unfortunately it's not often we get full-blown HD
from digital off-the-air signals, and the result is pixelization during
action shots, and 'way less than HD resolution. Give it a little time and
make sure the signal you're getting is really HD. During this up-coming
season of re-runs, the gorgeous HD show-off aerial shots of the city on "CSI
Miami" and "Vegas" and "CSI" might not be as perfect as on fresh episodes,
but those are the best test pictures to judge your set by. Too bad they
only last a few seconds, but if you pay close attention, at least you'll be
able to see that your set can do the job. Oh, yes, most of the stores
selling these big sets have special HD material recorded on a hard disk, and
of course, that stuff will be pretty damn good. Be patient, and you will
see that your set is all you hoped it would be, when the program material is
right.
I put my set in the corner and the two La-Z-Boys in the opposite corner to
get my viewing distances. You may have to depart a bit from conventional
furniture arrangements to get full enjoyment from your new XBR. Of course,
that's always up for a vote, if there's a wife to be considered. I don't
have that problem.

I measured, i'm actually a little under 9 feet away, and that's ideal
or so says the owners manual, it's sounds worse than it is, my house
is small i can't get any further away. my concern is with lack of
sharpness i thought i'd get with HD, or does this TV look grainy to
anybody else who owns one???

Have you calibrated it yet using Avia or DVE? If not, do that first. Or
pay a pro to come out and do it for you. The XBR sets are expensive
enough that paying a little more might be worth it.

Aw Jeez, I was hoping you wouldn't see that! But it's nice to know some

I have the Avia DVD, but it does say that it is supposed for CRT TV's?
since this is a rear projection do you think it will matter, i will
have a pro come out to the house, but first i have to replenish my
depleted bank accout, this TV was $$$ even with a good deal.
I have to go read some of these VOOM threads i have alot of peevs
about their brodcast service, not to mention the customer service.
I also think something may have happened Like my VOOM reciver
downloading an upgrade on it own overnight, because now some of the
channels in HD are great, although some don't really look that great,
but i guess how good could a low budget movie from the 80's look?
even if it is in HD.
And i now have to upgrade my pronto remote's files anyone have a file
for this TV pre made, can't find one online?
Thanks for all the help

This shouldn't surprise you, LCD jst isn't as good as DLP.
Hopefully, you can return it for a full refund.

I sit 10 feet away from my 60" WEGA and a good DVD looks geat and HD
boradcasts look excellent. If I conentrate and lean in 2 fee closer, I
can make out the scan lines. My cable signal varies from channel to
channel. In the upper digital section, the picture can sometimes look
close to DVD quality depending on the progrram material. But cable is
cable so with over compressed pictures, it ain't too impressive.

Looked at both DLP and LCD. Sorry, the DLP with it slightly green
tinged pictures just didn't cut it for me. Yes, I visited several
stores played with the picture controls. To each his own.

What good does it do to have a big tv if you have
to sit a mile away from it to have it look good?
If you sit far away from a big tv it becomes a
small tv. It soulds like a scam to have to sit
far away from a expensive hi-res tv to have it look
good. If you sit far away from a cheap low-res
tv it looks about the same, doesn't it? When I hear
people saying this stuff it just says to me that
the technology isn't quite there yet.

I also debated between a Sammy DLP and a GWIII and also noticed the slight
green caste on the Sammy. I chose the GWII because it appeared to handle SD
sources kinder. My eyeball distance is about 9 feet for a 42" screen that
seemed huge in the first few weeks coming from a 27" XBR. Also, in the
beginning, I was looking for every possible imperfection for that first 30
days. Sit back and relax. Unless you see a very obvious flaw, I firmly
believe you'll grow to love the HD images.
YMMV

Which controls, service menu, or just the user
menu?
No trace of green on my 61" or 56" Sammy. No
'screen door effect' either.

Now that's interesting - - "no screen door effect" - - are you saying that
no matter how close you get to the screen, you can't discern individual
pixels? This is the first requirement when I look at any projection set - -
is it well enough in focus that it resolves individual pixels in all parts
of the screen. Often the center will be very sharply focused and the
corners not so sharp, but still distinct. I found the 61" Samsung I first
owned (3 days) to be just fine as far as the sharpness was concerned, but
when I turned down the contrast so the highlights weren't so overpowering,
the loss of luminance bits made dark scenes take on a flat, stepped-area
appearance, and that combined with the inexplicable green tint and the
rainbow effect due to color-wheel sequencing, took it totally out of the
running for me. I'm glad to hear they finally were able to properly control
colors to get rid of the green tint. I've enjoyed my 60" Sony XBR for a
year and a half now, and don't regret that decision one bit.

No SDE compared to the Sony 60" LCD which I viewed in my home
for 3 weeks.

This is the one big flaw with the Sammy DLP, and in fact is the reason
I am sending mine back.

I see a little bit of rainbows, but doesn't bother me at all.
The contrast ratio, crispness, colors, etc,...everything except
as noted above made it a 'no contest' vs the Sony LCD.
I eagerly look forward to the HLP sets to see if they've fixed the
dark scene prob you mentioned. Just hope they are out in time for the
Olympics.

The user menu controls which along with the DVE DVD have provided me
with what I consider an excellent picture on my 60" Grand WEGA .
It can't deliver the dense blacks of a good direct view CRT, but
neither can any RPTV including those with CRTs. All non CRT's are a
compromise one has to make for a larger image size.
As I said before it is a matter of personal taste.
