This is really pissing me off. I've got a HP laptop, Win XP, with a 56K Conextant modem and Earthlink ISP. When I try to dial in to Earthlink, the graphic shows "Dialing in.." and I can hear the modem dialing, and it sounds like it's trying to connect. After about 30 seconds it gets quiet, another minute or so it tries dialing again and the same thing. Then I get either one of two errors: Error 674 or 778 or something like that with a message that says something like ".. cannont connect to remote computer modem.." or .."remote computer modem not working.."
I've tried about a dozen different access numbers. I've reinstalled the modem drivers. Talked to Earthlink Tech support. Did a diagnostic of the modem and everything is ok, including dialing in to a ATT server.
Any ideas???
It's particularly frustrating because about 2 months ago it was working fine. I use the laptop on trips so I don't use the Dial-up often.
Try making a completely new connection first. If under your network settings you see a network bridge, this may help, but you may need to dig deeper: http://support.microsoft.com/defau [...] -us;816486 If that doesn't solve it:
Now, if the modem bank you're dialing into accepts only v.90 compliant modems and you have a v.92, you'll need to contact HP or the company that now owns Conextant because they were bought out by another company. I'm drawing a blank on the company name. Anyhow, you'll need to enter a string in the modem properties.. found it.
http://www.toast.net/support/00331/ use AT+MS=V34 or v90 (version 90).
you may need to use AT+MS=V90,1
This should disable the digital part of your modem, which may help with connecting into your ISP.
Under Device Manager, go to the properties of your modem and you'll see where you can add this command line switch in.
