I'm trying to setup some computers to us a motorola modem/gateway. Three laptops were able to successfully connect and use the internet. One desktop which I tried to connect using ethernet, usb, and then a wireless usb adapter. Nothing seems to work. My network places seems to show every indication the that the network is connected, but I cannot get online for some reaseon. Pinging the gateway is uncessefull. I have know idea what is wrong, but I have to think it is something software based in the desktop. How can I trouble shoot / fix this problem?

Does the modem have a built in switch or are you using a router or something else to connect the 3 laptops? It would be helpful if you could provide some info as to what is connected to what.

If you are connecting everything directly to the modem then the modem probably has a built in router. If it doesn't, then it's possible your ISP limits you to three simultaneous MAC/IP addresses. Try resetting the modem and then connecting the desktop.

Is there anything different about the software on the desktop? When you connect it, you say you can't ping the default gateway so I assume you are getting an IP address?

Paste the output from ipconfig /all in your reply so we can see what's going on.
