HI Guys

I've mildly overclocked my e6600 to 3.1ghz. This thing is the morning after I noteiced on CPU-z that the core reading was at 2.97ghz! Is this normal and what does it mean? Then it goes back up to 3.1ghz and may say drop to 3.05 ghz then back up. Is this fluctuation normal? Do I need to do anything?

thanks :D

IIRC, my fsb varies from about 399.9 to 400.1, so my CPU freq varies from 3199.2 to 3200.8 MHz. THis could depend on the motherboard; mine is ASUS P5B Deluxe.

Strange, 3.1ghz->2.97ghz sounds like a very big fluctuation, it is about 3%. Is it hurting stability? I believe varying CPU multiplier is more stable than varying FSB frequency.

Have you turned spread spectrum off?

HI

The system is stable, when i'm running cpu intensive apps i notice that it hovers over 3.1ghz and seems to be running normal. Could it be in some energy efficcient mode maybe when I'm not running anything? What does spread spectrum do? I will have a look at it. I have a gigabyte DQ6. I think i might try lowering the FSB, this wan't occuring when i had the bus as 334 now at 345.

cheers

Going from 3.1GHz to 2.97Ghz is a bit high. I have my e6600 at 3600.0MHz and it fluctuates about .001 to .004 which is OK.

Try different software like CrystalCPUID, Coretemp and monitor the core speed. Maybe there is a glitch in CPU-Z.

Hi yeah coretemp always has the core mhz and 3.1ghz, i lowered the FSB now anyway to 334. Do you know if it's important to disable "EIST"?

thanks

Disable EIST (Enhanced Intel Speedster Tech) and VT (Virtualization Technology). This is going to take stress off the Northbridge.
