I'm running with:
2 IDE drives: Western Digital Caviar WD1200JB and a Seagate Barracuda ST3160023A 7200.7
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium with X2 3800+ with a Thermaltake CL-P0296
256mb 7800gt
2X256 mb of dual channel corsair and one 512mb stick of crucial
520w OCZ modstream
19" Samsung CRT

I can spend $200-300 now and then keep upgrading through the year a little bit at a time.

If you are going to keep this system for a while 1-2 years. I would up grade the memory. you are running a total of 1gb , but configuration will not permit the system to run in dual channel. I would add 3 sticks of the same type crucial 512 mb memory so that the system will run in dual channel.
what are the timings on your configuration?

X2 3800...2X256 mb of dual channel corsair and one 512mb stick of crucial...I can spend $200-300 now and then keep upgrading through the year a little bit at a time.

Purchase an Opteron 170 (had one in my former rig OC'd to 3.0 Ghz) and a matching 512 Mb Crucial, then eBay the X2 3800 and the 2X256 Corsair. This will put you into the fastest socket 939 CPU (FX-62 equivalent) at the lowest price, and 2X512 dual channel for ~ $300. Later you can add 2 more 512's for a total of 2Gb. 8)

What are you doing with the system? Gaming? just surfing the web? photoshop?

What Video Card do you have?

Why do you want to upgrade?

During school I mostly do schoolwork (MS Word, internet browsing) nothing in the least bit intensive. Sometimes I'll take a break and play some Splinter Cell, Rome Total War, DoTa, WoW. I'm running the EVGA 7800GT with copper heatsink. The memory timings are 2.5/3/3/3. If I were to upgrade to an opteron I wouldn't mind paying some more money for the OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K
