I'm looking to build my next system around a dual socket 940 board, my question is, am I gonna need ECC or is there anyway around that? I really don't wanna buy all new ram especially since DDR is already obsolete anyway. Thanks

Might I ask why you're gonna build a server system? If you really want a dual-socket system, buy QuadFX now and drop in a couple K8L's down the road.

I think you will be needing ECC RAM with Socket 940, although I'm not sure.

I need a dual socket system because I need some PCI-X slots for my RAID cards, and I can't afford quad fx at the moment. Plus I've always wanted a dual socket system and I can get 2 275 opty's for almost nothing so all I'd need is a board. I'm an 18 year old here with a not so good paying job so quadfx is out of the question, if I had that kinda money I'd be going for a QX6700.

The ram is kinda the deciding factor, if my current ram doesn't work then I'll probably just pick up a C2D considering I already have a brand new 775 board sitting around but no PCI-X. :(
