Does a 9800 pro work in this?

Well basically, I'm trying to enable my brother to play counter strike source on this computer: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00045728&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&tool=prodinfoCategory&query=S5000CL&product=364074&dest_page=prodinfoCategory

So I thought about getting a basic AGP card that will let him do that, which is the AGP Radeon 9800 128 MB Pro. Is that enough of a card to let him play CS:S on low settings with a decent number of fps? Does getting another 512 mb ram stick help? And does the video card actually fit in the computer? it says it has an agp slot, but I need to make sure.

All help is appreciated!

I don't think you need to worry about that. Just stick a good name brand as opposed to some generic and you should be fine.

If you feel that you will lose sleep over it, you can start by downloading CPU-Z which will give you more information about your RAM.

Well this is all I found on the ram on compaq's site:

Memory
Component Attributes
RAM (installed) 512 MB (1 x 512)
Maximum allowed 1 GB (2 x 512)
Speed supported PC2700 MB/sec (will run at PC2100)
Type 184 pin, DDR1-333 SDRAM
DIMM slots Two
Open slots One

All it says is the pin (184 ddr1-333 sdram), and the speed. So I have no idea what brand it is... how would I know which stick would run with this in dual channel?

Also, I'm getting this card for a good deal, plus it's not really a good investment to spend much on an agp card.

I have a 9700 pro and 1 GB of RAM and run HL2 at near 100 fps, so the 9800 will work just fine. I also run it a 1024X768, so if he's gaming at say 16X12 it won't run quite so well, just so you know. I have also tried to play with 512 of RAM and it was MUCH slower, so 1 GB is a MUST!!

Just so you know I think the 9800 pro is priced a little high, so if you aren't getting a great deal ($50-60) look at a newer gen card. 6600 GT and X800 can be gotten around $100.

oh yeah of course something like the 66gt or x800 is better than the
9800.

i figured that was what the op was planning on.

i dont always try to sway the op from what they haved planned.

I'm guilty! The price comparison today between the 9800pro and even an X800 really can't touch the performance difference between the two cards, if we were talking hundreds of dollars difference I wouldn't have suggested the possible change, but for a 50 dollar difference IMO the suggestion is at least a consideration.

The OP may not know the X800 will run circles around the 9800pro, I wouldn't want him later to regret the choice when he runs into things the 9800pro falls way behind on.

Not to mention the 9800pro is a hot running card and mine required an aftermarket GPU cooler and ramsinks to get it to run without crashing, and what hes planning on putting it in, probably doesn't have the best case airflow in the first place.

So if he runs into a heat issue with the 9800pro the additional cooler cost would have paid the difference between the two cards.

Don't buy any memory! PM me your mailing address, I have a 512mb stick of RAM you can have free, and I'll send it to you, its not doing me any good just sitting here. Ry

Its PC2100/266 512mb DDR, and your specs say it will work just fine for you, its used RAM but nothing is wrong with it, I'm not joking! Trust me, PM me your mailing address.

I have to say, Ry (4ryan6) is the MOST trustworthy person you'll ever know. He sent me the 512 stick ram and it's working PERFECTLY in the computer, and it was packaged flawlessly. Thank you SO MUCH Ry, you're awesome!

I have a pentium IV 2.6c which is close to yours but I have 1 gig of ram.

I have the 9800 pro and I run half-life 2 with max settings at 1280x1024 on high settings plush I use 2x AF and AA and stay over 30 easily. CS source is a bit less demanding than half-life2. however, HL2 episode one makes my card show its age and when episode 2 comes out, probably going to make it cry.

Well, I've installed the graphics card and ram yesterday, and it seems to be doing good. It now has 1 gig of ram (2 X 512 sticks, thanks to ryan), and the 9800 pro 128 mb. I did have to put casey's config for css because it wasn't really *playable* on pubs with the 9800, but with casey's config, I would get an fps in the mid/high 30s. I did expect a bit more juice out of the 9800 pro, but it is playable. I don't know how you can play half life 2 at max settings...I'm surprised about that. Maybe because the two sticks of ram aren't in dual channel, but I'm not sure. It is playable though, a computer that used to get 10-15 fps in Counter Strike 1.6 is now getting an fps average in the 30s is a great improvement.

Do you guys know of any program that can detect the temperature of the radeon 9800 pro? I tried ati-tool but it doesn't have the temperatures for some reason. Any suggestions?

The 9000 Radeons didn't have thermal monitoring hardware so you won't be able to monitor the temps unless you physically check them yourself with some sort of temp probe.

Honestly you should be getting better frames than that. I was averaging in the 50s in CS:S at 10x7 with an Athlon XP at 2.2 Ghz, 9600XT and 1 GB RAM. I didn't use Casey's Config. You need to mess around with different resolutions and the in-game settings. Either that, or something else is bogging your system down.

Yeah! I had 512 ram with the 9800 pro and i got avg framerate of around 55-60. This was with a P4 2.5 ghz.
