I have been talking to HP concernng a scanner I just bought (5400cse). They state in their documentation that if I am printing a *color* photo on a 1200 dpi printer, then the maximum dpi setting for the scanner shold be 300 dpi. They offer no explanation and their CS people are useless.

I am assuming that this is because there are 4 dots (CMKY) per pixel when a printer prints. This seems to mean that a 1200 dpi printer actually has a resolution of 300ppi... (a resolution which is pretty crappy).

Is this true? Is my assumption correct? Are all color printers this way?

Based on this, it seems like a waste to buy a 2400 dpi scanner... unless you have a 9600 dpi printer, the extra resolution is useless...

And aside, why are printers always asymmetrical? Who would want a 4800x1200 dpi printer?

cheers,
tom
