The view from the Fall VON show this week in Boston is that VoIP\'s time as a profitable market has passed...again.

I am getting very frustrated by how people do not make the difference between VOIP company. I do categorize VOIP company into 2 groups:
1) Comcast, Verizon, Vonage, ect... (VOIP which aims to replace traditional phone)2) Skype, Microsoft, Google, ect... (pure software VOIP)

The reason I am bringing this up, it is because I do not understand how company like Vonage can be treaten by Skype. I have not meet one person who has replaced his traditional phone by Skype or MSN Messenger because it is dependent from computer. Eventhough some devices do allow you to get away from computer for Skype user, it still too expensive to attract the consumer. I do not see software VOIP company as a treat to other companies like Vonage, Comcast or Verizon.

VOIP still a young industry and it still developing. I can compare Vonage with Amazon. The reason Vonage has not been successful with their IPO, it's because they have not made any profit due to the high cost of marketing. Profit will come over time.

Retail VoIP providers as well as traditional telco's are losing call minutes to free voice service providers. My personal experience is that I have both a retail VoIP line and Skype and end up using Skype more than the VoIP line.

AOL's decision to end its TotalTalk VoIP service after only a year and replace it with its AIM Phoneline is just another indicator of the trouble that retail VoIP providers are in.

Retail VoIP will not go away, but it isn't the exciting, go-go area that is was not so long ago. And as far as being a profit center...forget it!
