Client login scrips failing with Event ID 1085

We just converted to AD from Netware. The dweebs in charge for testing
failed to notice the following error on a pile of Win2k SP4 workstations and
a few WinXP SP2's. Group policy is applied, but login scripts fail to run.

Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1085
Date: 11/9/2004
Time: 12:34:35 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Description:
The Group Policy client-side extension Scripts failed to execute. Please
look for any errors reported earlier by that extension.

I've attempted the following fixes from MS Technet and all have failed:

Hi Chris.

Possibly the user account does not have permissions to run the logon script
or do the task? Try to logon to a computer as a regular user that is
supposed to be using this logon script and try to execute it locally via
that user [ you may want to copy it to the computer for this] to see if it
work or not. If the script can be run as a "startup" script then it will run
in system context before any user logs on. I am not sure if that is the crux
of the problem or not but may be worth checking out. --- Steve

Hi Steven,

I ruled out rights by doing as you said. Also, I am able to browse to the
AD location in sysvol and run the script fine.

Hmm. It is good that the script does run but I am not quite sure offhand why
it does not run as a Group Policy logon script. I would double check that
the path, etc is correct for the logon script and maybe try to also add
another "test" one that would have a real simple command to see if that
would work. When I create a logon or start up script, I usually open the
Group Policy setting for the script, select "show files" and copy the script
there, then go back to the script properties, select add and then browse to
my script to add it. Group Policy may be having a problem finding the script
for some reason. You may also find the support tool gpresult helpful in
trying to troubleshoot Group Policy problems. If you use the /v switch you
will get much more detail but may then want to port it to a text file. ---
