hi

my friend just got a new PC and got generic 533mhz ram even though I told him not to
he also has a Gigabyte 965p-S3 MB

will he be able to OC this much?

will he be able to run a lower divider to have a 400FSB(2.8ghz) CPU and keep the ram at 533mhz?

or cant you run lower multipliers like that?

Just depends on the ram. I'm sure he could get at least a mild OC with it. Won't know till he tries it. Anything over a 333FSB may be pushing it though. That's running the memory in a 1:1 ratio. I'm not big on the whole ram ration though. Someone else may be able to suggest a different ratio that may help boost FSB. IMO, it's doubtfull he'll see 400. May also depend on the timings.

Well he has a good motherboard for overclocking, and alot will depend on the memory and cpu, every combination is going to overclock differently you will have to experiment to find the sweet spot. Just dont over do it on the voltages.

My Corsair 667 memory has managed to get over 980mhz, but then again, its not generic memory. Some memory will overclock by loads, others won't. Your best bet is to lower the timings and have a go, It would be good if you could run it using a divider, but my Gigabyte DS3 won't let the divider go below 1:1. Which doesn't help you at all. They used to let you use lower dividers than that, maybe if I updated the BIOS it might give me the option. Lowering the divider was neccesary when overclocking my Athlon 64 3000, as my 400mhz memory wouldn't go beyond 420, or something stupid like that.
