    Hi,

For Group Policy Software Installation to work here is what you need.

1> Make sure DNS is setup correctly
    http://www.sd61.bc.ca/windows2000/dns.htm

2> Make sure GPO is on an OU that contains the "Users" (for the User
Configuration" to work. AND/OR "Computers" (For the computer
    configuration" to work.

3> Make sure the Software Package is running from an UNC Path eg.
    \\myserver\myinstallpackage.

4> Make sure that you assign to Users who have Admin access to install
or if not then assign to Computers.

5> If assigned to Computers, then make sure "Domain Computers" group
has at least Read access to share listed in #3.

6> Make sure the MSI is an "auto installing MSI" or if not, then has
an MST file you have customized to make it "auto installing".

    Cheers,

    Lara

    Hi!

I too have had problems getting software deployment to work through
Group Policy. It works just fine when setting it up by user, but have
had no success getting it to work by computer.

I have following all of your steps listed as well as done some pretty
extensive troubleshooting but it just will not install. I know the
policy is being applied because other parts of it are taking effect.

I have a test OU setup with the computer account in it for my test PC.
I have setup the policy to install by computer (assigned). The PC
boots up normally with no sign that software is being installed, and
in fact it is not being installed.

Does anyone have any other ideas, suggestions on why this isn’t
    working?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

That is indeed weird. Have you checked the event log? I had an issue
before I put the Domain Computer group access to the share but after
    that everything is fine.

However, it will only do software that doesn’t require any input or
has an MST file for it. I use it for Adobe Acrobat and Office which
have the ability to create MST files and also any software produced by
MS like the Shadow Copy Client, and the Power point viewer. All
install without a problem. I have even created an MSI for IExplorer
and deployed IE SP1 via Group policy assigned to computers.

Make sure you haven’t removed the SYSTEM=Full control group from the
    local HD’s.

Check the event logs. Mine, even when it failed, actually started with
    "installing managed software".

    Cheers,
    Lara
