The gist of the probing questions is that a GPS does nothing more than
provide your Lat, Long and elevation (or altitude if you are in the air).
You can get wired, SD or BT GPS units that provide that info using free
software. Once you want actual maps and some more useful features, where you
are and what you want to do are important.

I think you will be hard pressed to find much in the way of mapping programs
that specifically support Africa. As such you would likely be looking at
some of the products that let you scan or aquire raster maps and then
calibrate them so at least you can see where you are. Oziexplorer is one
such as is Vito Navigator. You might want to browse around
www.gpspassion.com to see what might be useful for you.
