Okay, so I'm thinking of going LCD but I'm left wondering what resolution I should opt for? 1280x1024 vs {EDIT}1680x1050{EDIT}

The problem being game performance - seeing that LCD runs in native res, I dunno if going for {EDIT} 1680x1050 {EDIT} will be like shooting myself in the foot for possible future gaming titles.

My gaming goes from low level graphics requirements, right through to the most demanding I can get, and frankly i do not like playing games with low in game options - so I'd rather sacrifice AA and AF.

Can someone with either of these types of LCD's tell me more about gaming performance at either the resolutions, and maybe advise me on my current situation?

I intend on upgrading to R600 in the not too distant future.

Current spec:
E6600 @ 2.4
2048mb RAM DDR2
Asus P5B Deluxe
X1900XTX

its pretty simple, both resolutions will be fine using either an x1900xtx or a R600, but then you already knew that didnt you.

I have a 1900 xtx on a 1920x1200 monitor and it's a little slow in Oblivion. When I first got my computer I hooked it up too a 720p TV via DVI and that was much better at least for Oblivion. NWN2 is a little slow too. But it really doesn't look too bad if I run it at a lower res. Still I'm planning on getting an R600 when they come out. Games usually look okay if you can find a res that divides well into the native res 3/4s usually works well.

That's the thing - I'm not guaranteed to have a trouble free experience, whether in XP with DX9 or Vista with DX10. The majority of games will run good, but I'd hate to get a high spec next gen title and struggle to run optimally. So, with CRT is still have functionality between 1280x1024 and 1600x1200. When moving from higher res LCD back to non native 1280x1024, how bad is the transition?

Currently, I'm thinking of going the 1280x1024 way, just to cover my own behind as I'm not guaranteed of next gen titles in DX10 at high resolutions running smoothly.

I guess it's a catch 22 situation, my own preferences and idealism is hampering me from deciding on a LCD monitor - I dislike being limited to native resolution.

Mate, if the question is whether or not to buy an LCD over a CRT then this is my last post, because frankly, screw CRT, LCD is the only way forward, regardless of resolutions etc.

No doubt LCD is better, and I guess I will move to LCD soon - I just want some feeling on which res to opt for, before I end up buying a screen and then have to buy yet another one in a short time.

1680x1050 is a better res and will therefore give you better graphics. and will last longer before upgrading is needed.
