to discuss a possible takeover of Sprint in recent days and have

Verizon Communications Inc. has no imminent plans to bid for Sprint
Corp., people familiar with the situation said on Tuesday, toppling a
potential obstacle to Sprint's $37.8 billion bid for Nextel
Communications Inc.

Separately, Britain's Vodafone Group Plc denied it was in talks with
Verizon, its wireless joint venture partner, about any offer for
Sprint.

Furthermore, according to

would face serious government opposition.
