I was considering buying either a new JVC HMDH40000 D-VHS deck, or a used JVC
HMDH30000 D-VHS deck off of Ebay. Both have RF inputs for an antenna. One ad
for the DH30000 says the D-VHS decks do not have a HDTV OTA tuner built in and
that you need an external tuner with a firewire output to record in HDTV. It
seems odd to me that this would be true. Does someone on this list know what
the story is?

Thanks in advance,

Randy

Unfortunately this is true. The current and past crop of DVHS decks only
have NTSC tuners.

I imagine the product is in *the works*, however as I haven't heard much,
I'll assume first pass will not be till 2005 and then mass affordability not
until 2006 or later.

That is correct, the two models you mention do not have an HDTV tuner.
An upcoming new JVC D-VHS VCR, the HM-DT100U does. What little I can
find about it is here:

http://www.1888camcorder.com/hm-dt100u.html

I have the HM-DH30000U and picture quality is great when it works
right but it is a quirky, fragile VCR. I have two working correctly
now and JVC has been responsive to fix the problems under warranty,
including a firmware update. Still I can only hope they will continue
to work for years to come as I have little confidence. This format is
considered just an interim product until recordable HD-DVD makes it to
market, maybe in a year or two so it is not without reservation that I
would recommend it to anybody with or without built in HDTV tuner.
