Hello

I am thinking about upgrading but wasnt quite sure if it will make a huge differ or what option to go with.

Current System

Amd 3700
939 socket
2Gb Ram
7600 gt video card

Option 1
Upgrade video card : 7900gt

Option 2
E6300 , Motherboard and of course I will have to replace my ram.

What options would enhance my gaming if at all...looking for a higher FPS

And would you mind suggesting a $100 MB and 2g of ram from newegg if you choose this option

Thank You

Jeff

I'd go with option 2, new mobo, and new ram, its a much better upgrade then getting a new video card. Although i would get an E4300 instead of E6300, OCs like a dream and its a couple bucks cheaper then the E6300. Are you going to be oc'ing?

For the mobo i would get a Gigabyte S3, feature rich, $108, and decent oc'ing ability. I cant recommend any ram until i know if your going to oc or not, if your not any name brand DDR2-533 value ram will work fine, if you are planning on oc'ing this is the cheapest 2gb set i would get.

Right now if all you are looking for is better gaming fps the 7900gt will give you better results than a cpu/mb/ram upgrade. I'm not saying it's the best upgrade path but it will give you the best instant performance gain for gaming.

What do you think needs upgrading on your system? FPS or overall performance.

If you go with the E6xxx CPU you should get DDR2-800 RAM
With the E4300, you can use DDR2-667. Sounds like 1 gig will work to start, you can add 1 gig more later without replacing what you buy, with the right MB!

Why is there such a large difference in price between the two options? Buying a 7900GT/7950GT can be done for ~$220. Buying a motherboard, CPU, and ram will be a lot more. Your gaming won't "increase" if you reuse the 7600GT in option 2. You'll see a small increase in frame rates, but nothing compared to what you could get if you bought the 7900GT. If these are your options, then I suggest getting the 7900GT. That should beat the 7600GT no matter what the CPU is. (within reason of course...)

go with the best GPU you can afford to get better gaming you can always reuse it (and replace your old one) when you buy a new system

Get a new card.. The 7900GT is a good overall performer. It definitely boost your performance. Performance wise, most games, if not all, will benifit from a stronger GFX card rather than a slightly more powerful CPU..

Get a new Card.. Thats my opinion

I was in the exact same shoes as you about 2 months ago. I had an Athlon 64 3200 and was looking for the same type of upgrade.

I changed out my current mobo and the Athlon for an E6400 and a new Asus P5PE-VM mobo.

The difference was awesome !

Go to Toms CPU charts HERE and see the difference in your current chip and the E6400 since they don't show the E6300 but it will be very comparable.

Plus while you aren't gaming you will Love the multi tasking difference the E6300 gives you over the Athlon. Its not even a close race there at all.

Don't get me wrong the 7900GT would be an excellent upgrade game wise with some nice FPS increase. I am just saying that I think the CPU upgrade would be better over all. And with DX10 around the corner why not wait on the graphics card a bit longer.

On the ram, just saw this deal...

Newegg has the Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory for $164 - $20MIR = $144 w/ free shipping.

The Big Differ in price is because $450 is my limit.

The only thing that turns me off about the video card is that I will probally want to upgrade to the dx10 card.

I just built this puter about 4 months ago, I was just wondering if I would exp any botlenecking on my current cpu ( amd 3700 ) with a new 7900gt.

I am leaning towards the e6300 upgrade , and waiting for the dx10 video cards to come out.

since you arent overclocking, you could save yourself some money and just buy a athlon64 x2 for socket 939, that way you wont have to buy a new mobo, ram, etc. A 4800+ would work great.. its cheaper now and it performs similar to the E6600

If your budget is $450, get the 8800GTS. Much faster then either the 7600/7900GT, and will blow away the C2D with either of those cards to. You said you wanted to do this for better gaming, better gaming requires a strong GPU. The best GPU you can use with your budget is the 8800GTS. The C2D upgrade might be a good upgrade overall, but it isn't the best for gaming.

(and before someone starts to ask, you'll be fine running the GTS with a 3700+. Its the same chip as the FX55, and you can always overclock it for a little more.)
